John Fleck came from former Scottish giants Rangers with a reputation of a flair player who'd yet to reach his potential. Capturing him was somewhat of a coup by all accounts, especially for a team such as Coventry that'd just found themselves relegated to the third level of English football, with clubs from higher leagues known to be interested in his services.
I don't know about you, but I was excited. Rather oddly, the immediate comparison we like to draw with any flair player around the club is with Kevin Thornton. Fleck himself will find these comparisons a regular occurrence while we're all attempting to figure him out for ourselves. He's similar in stature to KT, in that he's no giant, and appears to hold those magic ingredients in a player; flair and ingenuity. That alone rendered me keen, but as with Thornton, he often struggles to impose himself on matches.
I think we do have to acknowledge that like many flair players, consistency in performance is one thing that you're rarely going to find. It's true about the rest of our squad, given the level we're now playing at, but this drop in performance is often more recognisable in players like Fleck, due to the impact his 'good' performances can potentially have.
We need that spark in our team. While I don't expect world-beating performances every game, everything that was said about him prior to joining suggests that we may have acquired ourself someone close to half-nifty. We all hope that proves to be accurate.
